Blogging

The day I {almost} broke my blog

On Wednesday this week, I was a bit naughty and fiddling with my blog at work. Just wanted to make the design a bit more personal. Anyway, I was tweaking away and following some instructions on the blog designer’s page to remove something when I got some kind of error message. Which then resulted in me not being able to view my blog. And more importantly, not being able to access anything on my WordPress dashboard. Not even being able to log in to undo anything I’d done.

I thought I was going to have a heart attack.

Well, I was definitely panicking.

I began having horror images of losing my blog. No more ‘Over Cups of Coffee’. No more brilliantly {ahem!} penned posts. All that creativity down the drain.

ARGGGGHHH!!!

I tweeted for help. I refreshed the page a zillion times. I emailed the blog designer. I asked begged for help on the WordPress support forums. I continued to refresh the page.

Until finally, the WordPress Support forum had the first solution. To make the changes on the site hosting my blog.

Now, I’m still learning in terms of technology around self-hosting and the like. But luckily…luckily, I have been backing up my blog on a daily basis.

And after about 30 minutes of panic, I succeeded in restoring my blog. True, I lost a few comments on my then latest post but that was all that was lost. It could have been a whole lot worse.

I think it’s a sign I need to pick up my game and learn the techie stuff around hosting blogs a bit more.

It took a while but my heart rate eventually went back to normal.

Anyone else think it was a consequence for doing non-work stuff at work? I think so.

Have you had any scares like this?

Do share.

***Linking up over at With Some Grace for FYBF***

Until next time,

Cheers!!!

I can relate to this sinking feeling – I am currently having it off and on as I learn how to navigate around a MAC

OMG! Be careful. I am going through the same currently. My laptop has a mind of its own and shuts down abruptly. Every other second I need to save my work before continuing. It’s acting weird ever since I spilled a glass of wine on it! 🙂

I don’t think it was a consequence of doing non-work stuff at work 🙂

I can get by with the basics in WP, but don’t know much about self-hosting.

Very pleased to say nothing like this has ever happened to me. But if it did, I would not know what the heck to do. Close call there!

I know I hold my breath anytime I do anything!
I moved hosts on my own a few months ago, and that was hard work! So many days of things not looking like they should! It was so stressful

WordPress self-hosting is always a pain-in-the-ass! I have so many friends on FB who keep landing in similar situations every now & then. And some of them are real techie ppl, who’ve been working with self hosting on wordpress for years! Sometimes, it’s an accidentally broken code. Sometimes, it’s some add-on script they installed, or their hosting provider had a breakdown/spyware infection in their servers! the list if issues is endless!

That’s one of the reasons I decided to stick with blogger, the other obviously being money. I make design changes in my blog so often. And all I need to do is take a backup of the entire template before changing the code. That’s all. Even if I corrupt something, it doesn’t erase any of my data (posts/comments/images). Nor do I lose access to my dashboard. (But that IS possible if I unknowingly install a 3rd party malware or spam script. They can even delete my entire blog if I do that! LOL!)

I thought I lost an entire post a couple of weeks ago. It was all there before me as I was editing it then suddenly I clicked a couple of keys a little too quickly and pouf! It was gone. I was devo’ed to say the least. Somehow I managed to get it back thank goodness.

Congrats on sorting out your blog issues.

My blog is still in its new-born stage. This is one of my biggest fears! I need to educate myself more on techie stuff!

I just saw some useful posts on blog maintenance on thewonderforest.com yesterday. I’m going to peruse those right now! (Thanks for inadvertently reminding me to 😉 )

Oh my God, I completely understand your panic! I think I even blogged about it. Once, I tried logging into my Gmail account and my blog wasn’t even listed there. After 24 hours of panic, repeated mails to Google Help and a few hair-tearing desperate antics later, they restored it.

Worst moments of my blogging life :/

Ava, I backup through my webhost, Bluehost. I’ll probably do some research and write a post on the same. It was a massive scare I must admit.
