Autonomy

autonomy

Don’t play football
they said to me
You’ll have a fall
they said to me

Don’t stay in the sun
they said to me
Dark-skin helps no one
they said to me

Dress like a girl
they said to me
Learn how to twirl
they said to me

Cross your legs
they said to me
When asking, beg
they said to me

Don’t talk too much
they said to me
Men are your crutch
they said to me

Be modest and demure
they said to me
Always remain pure
they said to me

You must find work
they said to me
Home-duties, don’t shirk
they said to me

You are a woman
they said to me
A secondary citizen
they said to me

I heard their messages
loud and clear
But I chose not to listen
nor to live in fear

My autonomy is important
I’ll do as I please
Live my life to the fullest
and sway with the breeze

Nothing good comes from listening to them. You chose well. 🙂

That’s right girl… There’s a hindi song that goes “kuch to log khahenge, logo ka kaam hai kehna”… Ride the wind I would say…
