Life

Powerless

Tuesday evening. Around 5:30 p.m. I had just finished posting my first blog post of the new year and was reading other blogs via IBOT. Then there was a noise. A sort of thud. And everything went quiet.

The TV which had been on in the background was off.

The laptop dimmed.

The oven which had my mini pizza cooking shut down.

The cordless phone didn’t function.

The lights were out {it didn’t matter as much given that the sun only sets around 8:30 p.m.}

And worst of all, the router — which means my internet connection — shut down.

At first I thought a fuse had blown in my unit. Turned out I was wrong because a few of my neighbours gathered downstairs to check what was going on. And then I noticed it. Way across the road, some huge tree branches appeared to have fallen on power lines.

One of my neighbours rang the electricity company and turned out about 113 houses had lost power. And yes, the tree was probably at fault. They estimated that power would be resumed by 8:30 p.m.

I spent time till then reading. Finished my book. {Review to come shortly}.

It made me realise just how much we depend on power. Without it, there is honestly nothing one can do. Because, once it got dark, I couldn’t even read. {Also because I was stupid enough not to invest in one of those LED booklights!} So I went to bed.

The power returned at 9:30 apparently.

And in the morning, I found out that my router wouldn’t work. The power button kept flickering. I tried a number of things. Went to work and printed out a few things to do. Tried a lot more when I got home from work. But, nothing. I think it blew out with the power failure. I realised then just how addicted to the internet I am. I have 3G on my phone but I use it sparingly. Without the WiFi at home, I felt like I was going mental. I would check my phone every few minutes only to remember the WiFi was not functioning.

Today, after work, I headed out to Officeworks and bought a new one.

And life is back to normal again! πŸ™‚

Until next time,

Cheers!!!

Tell me about it! Did you know, they are considering including it in the DSM-5 as a mental health disorder?

Haha…didn’t realise we were that similar! πŸ˜€ Yes, I can’t survive without the interwebs… “I’m PB and I’m an addict”.

Mini pizza — pizza on wholemeal muffins instead of normal pizza base. Should have just said pizza!

Oh Jas, let’s say it’s not as common as in India. Here we tend to lose power in massive storms or freak accidents like this one. πŸ™‚ In almost 8 years, this is the longest I’ve gone without power here.

πŸ˜€ I wonder how long I can go without internet. I am usually crazy about checking blogs and emails frequently. And even that, I have started keeping away from it all during the weekends. So I think I am not that much of an addict πŸ™‚

On the topic of smartphones – got one sometime last year. Used it for a few weeks; didn’t like the addict I was turning into. So I gave it up and went back to my old basic phone.

Welcome back here T! There was a time when I could go without the internet on weekends but I notice that if I am single, I’m definitely addicted! And smartphones are definitely bad for you. Sounds like you made a sane decision. I had a smartphone for a year but wasn’t addicted because it had a very small screen and well, wasn’t great. But once I got my nexus earlier this year, I was gone!

It’s scary how much we expect/need/want/demand it… we try to stay away from the internet on weekends – doesn’t always work, but we sure try and are very proud when we succeed πŸ™‚

There was a time when I could go without it over the weekend. Since I got my latest smartphone though, that’s gone out the window. Oh yes…wouldn’t want to be without power in a cold country!!!
