Reviewing my 30 by 30 list

{Click image for source}

Given that I turn 29 sometime this month, I thought it would be wise for me to actually review my 30 by 30 list. Because I just have a year to complete it.

I also thought that given I made this list when I was around 25 (I think), it might be a good idea to also replace things that I highly doubt will happen to something more achievable within this year.

Stuff I’ve completed successfully:

1. Join a gym: I think I’ve written enough about going to the gym and enjoying it.

2. Get my Australian citizenship: Did that in 2010.

3. Start some private psych work: I tried, tested and quit it last year.

4. Manage most of my anxiety: I think I’d like to think I’ve achieved this. It’s been a while since I’ve had massive anxiety. Sure I still get a bit anxious but I never said it’d go away.

5. Make a new friend (offline): My colleague at work, M, has moved into the friend category in the past year.

6. Meet a blog friend: Yes I did. I met Miss RBit when she was in Sydney last year.

7. Complete a reading challenge: I first achieved this in 2011 and then again in 2012.

8. Live by myself again: I have done it a few times in between flatmates.

9. Write a short story: I did it during my creative writing class in 2010.

10. Volunteer/Donate to charity: I haven’t volunteered yet but I am donating on an ongoing basis (monthly) to two charities.

11. Go to a bar and have a drink by myself: I did this when I was waiting for a friend to arrive.

12. Be part of the audience at a TV show: This was one of the first ones I completed.

13. Get my full license: Got it at the end of 2011. Did not get a good photo for a 3 year license. What else is new?

14. Attend at least 6 Meetups (via meetup.com) per year: I found my book club through this as well as the Sydney Feminists Group and the Amnesty group. So yes, this one’s a success.

15. Become an accredited Triple P trainer: I got accredited in 2011 and since then have run about 4 seminars for parents with a colleague.

16. Become more assertive. I think I may have become assertive to the point of being a bit too obnoxious.

17. Get my parents and sister over to Australia for a holiday. Well, technically, they paid for the airfares but I covered their stay and some other stuff. It’ll become apparent a little later why I couldn’t afford to cover their airfares.

18. Buy a new camera and take more pictures. Especially of things around me. I bought one and took pictures. Cat pictures count, don’t they?

19. Buy the entire DVD series of Monk and watch it.

20. Go for a bushwalk at least once a year. Sure thing. Need to do it more often though.

21. Get a pet cat or dog (whichever I am permitted): Make that 2 cats — Pebbles and Buttons.

22. Buy a house/unit: Yes, this is something no one knows about {till now} apart from my family. I did this back in 2009. 3 years and 5 months ago. Of course, I have a mortgage but I enjoy having my own unit. And yes, unfortunately, to have a reasonable life with a mortgage in Sydney, I have to share with someone. I still hope that some years down the track, I will be able to afford to live without a flatmate. I give up a lot of luxuries {such as going away for holidays} to pay off more than I need to on this loan. Oh yeah, and I also watch the interest rates like a hawk every first Tuesday of the month.

Stuff in progress and achieveable:

23. Reach goal weight and remain healthy: I only have 0.5 kgs to go to reach my goal weight but I think more importantly, I’m on track to lead a healthy lifestyle. Thanks to 12WBT, I really watch my portion sizes and also what I eat. It’s been almost 2 months since I finished the program and I haven’t gained weight. In fact I lost a kilo and am still enthusiastically going to the gym and eating well.

24. Learn another language and be able to have a conversation with a native speaker: I did two terms of Italian back in 2010. And guess what? I have re-enrolled this year for two more terms to do Level 1. Let’s see how we go.

25. Start paying back my parents: I’m doing that every week. Putting aside money in an account to pay them back.

26. Compile a bunch of resources for clients and parents and file them neatly. This is progressing slowly and steadily.

Not completed and need to be reviewed:

27. Learn to play ‘Wonderwall’ and ‘Time of your life’ on the guitar: Yeah…I highly doubt this one is going to happen. I haven’t touched my guitar in over 3 years. I don’t like the idea of cutting my nails too short. I’m so going to have to replace this one! I’m going to replace it with Go Camping. I’ve never gone on an overnight camp and would love to do it. Now to just try and rope in my friends.

28. Go on a holiday by myself in Australia: When I made this plan, I was single. Then I got into a relationship and it kinda went out the window. But now that I’m single again, it’s back on the list. I have been thinking of going to Hyams Beach for 2-3 days in the off-peak season. So I’ll still keep this on the list. I must admit, my friend J reckons that since I came to a whole new country by myself at 21, it should count in this section. 😀

29. Have $10000 in savings: This is going to have be replaced. Thanks to No. 22, it’s probably not achieveable. Instead, maybe $6000 is a more realistic goal.

30. See the snow for real: Yes. Almost 30 and haven’t seen snow yet. I guess I could choose to go to a holiday in the snow by myself and kill two birds with one stone. I’ll still keep this on the list but of course, it only gives me June to September this year to achieve it. If I can’t do it by then due to finances, I will replace it.

So there we go. Not bad. I have achieved 22 out of 30 with 12 months to go. 8 more should be doable, right?

Wish me luck!

Until next time,

Cheers!!!

If it was up to me I’d say you’ve made wonderful progress overall. Didn’t know you bought your unit, that’s truly nice. Best of luck with the ones yet to be done!

Thanks Magali! Yeah…the unit thing has been kept hush-hush. Not even extended family know about it nor friends in India. Only immediate family and friends here. Guess I didn’t want it to sound like I was bragging and also didn’t want to jinx anything.

I think you have made fantastic progress 22/30 is definitely a pass and like you said you still have 12 months to go. My husband is 36 and still hasn’t seen snow in real life. It is on his wish list as well.

Nice work, you’ve done heaps! My 30 by 30 list ended up being an epic failure, however number 30 on the list, get pregnant was the one I was most keen on and I managed that with 18 months to spare so I wasn’t gonna complain too much!

Oh, and I learnt Wonderwall on the guitar when I was 14 when my sister was learning guitar. I have no idea what chords or anything it was, it was just a matter of copying the finger positions my sister did and doing it over and over. I drove her nuts with it!
