I know politics is a dirty game. I know most politicians don’t seem to have a conscience.
But somehow, with Julia Gillard as the PM, the ‘game’ has become dirtier and all the rules have gone out the window. To the point where the dirty tactics are basically personal attacks.
I am not here to say Julia Gillard is a fantastic PM. She’s made some bad decisions with regards to some of her policies and I definitely do not agree with all the party has done so far. But then you have the Liberals. And their supporters. Who cry foul when Ms Gillard plays the gender card. But you know what? After recent events, why the hell shouldn’t she play the gender card? Because let’s face it, no other male politician in the recent past has copped this much personal abuse.
No one made fun about Kevin Rudd’s or John Howard’s genitalia.
No one has talked about stuffing a male prime minister in a sack and throwing them in the sea.
No one has commented about a male politician’s parent dying of shame.
No one has questioned the sexuality of a male prime minister’s wife or girlfriend.
No one asks Barack Obama or Tony Abbott about their sex lives.
So why do people seem to think it’s ok to make such comments about Julia Gillard?
It becomes harder to say it’s not about gender.
Because if it wasn’t about gender, these idiots would focus on her policies.
Not on her breasts or vagina or childlessness.
It terrifies me to think that misogynists and sexists will be governing the country following the elections this year. What hope have we got for future generations when women continue to be treated as worthless objects without a brain by people in power? Or are told to shut up in public?
And yet, people say feminism is not required.
It is now more than anything that feminists need to stand up and speak.
And not let misogyny take over.
Until next time,
