Sleep. Or the lack of it.

I have been all about living a healthy lifestyle in the past year. And while I have done a lot to change things around in terms of diet and exercise, one part of my life has taken a major hit. Sleep.

Some of you might know I attempt to wake up by 4:30 {and am usually successful except when it’s bloody cold!!!} and get to the gym by 5-5:15 for a workout on weekdays. If I am working on a Saturday, it counts as weekday hours for me. And my sleep-in on a weekend is usually 7. The latest this year has been 8 a.m. Having been going for bushwalks on the weekends though has also meant I wake up between 5 and 7 depending on where the walk is scheduled.

Now I have no problems with early mornings. In fact, in the past few years I have become a morning person. I love being awake when most of the world is still deep in slumber, I love that I can make the most of the day. And until last year, I was still getting 8 hours of sleep most nights.

This year though, things have changed. In terms of the time I get to bed.

Yes, it’s been late. Late for me is past 9:30 p.m.

And I’ve only been getting about 5 to 6 hours of sleep. Which is not good. It has caught up with me occasionally and my body has given way to the point where I’ve had to take a day off work and just sleep after calling in sick. So yes, I have realised that my sleep patterns are pretty shit. What’s not helping the cause is that I wake up at least a couple of times in the middle of the night. With my holiday starting next Saturday, I will be able to catch up on some zzzzs. I hope. But I also need a plan for later. And I’ve been brainstorming a bit around my morning and evening routines and how to better those.

    I don’t know about you, but the one thing that’s been eating into my sleep is the internet. Social networking, browsing, blog reading, wikipedia… time just flies by, and before I know it, it’s 4 a.m. -_- I need to, as in, NEED TO regulate my internet hours and set myself a regular bed time. It doesn’t help that I’m an evening person either.

    About waking up at night, maybe some relaxing teas might help, like chamomille or orange blossom tea. They’re supposed to be good.

      Err…you might have hit the nail on the head there Vivienne. Blogging has kept me awake as has having the internet on my phone. I find that I lie in bed and while previously I would read for 15 minutes before sleeping, now I am on my phone reading blogs or checking up Meetup events and then it’s 1030-11! So yeah, I guess I really need to regulate that too. Might have to write it up so that I stick to it!

      A friend did suggest chamomile but I don’t like the taste. I might check out for Orange blossom or something else that might help with sleep. Thanks! πŸ™‚

    I really struggle when I don’t sleep enough PB and so have a 9.15 deadline to be in bed. I then read for 10-15 mins and it helps me sleep better. I was in your place last year and started taking conscious steps towards better sleep too. I sleep 8 hours every night or I can’t function now πŸ˜› I leave my phone in the living room so there’s no temptation to grab it at night.

    I think a lot of it is definitely about time management and I think your list definitely reflects that. I pick outfits the night before (my morning brain isn’t suited for that decision). I also prep part of my meals on Sunday evenings so during the week, when I come home from work I just have to put the chicken in the oven and steam the veggies (chopping up etc is all done on Sundays). It’s a little thing but saves a lot of time.

    I also have a “Sleepy” playlist which I play on nights I’m feeling particularly anxious on a low volume and it soothes me to sleep I find. I also have about 5 yoga moves that I do in bed sometimes when I’m feeling particularly stressed out (deep breathing is NOT overrated!).

    I guess at the end of the day, it’s making a conscious decision to ease your mind into sleep so just do things that relax you and put you at ease. You’re a planner and organiser like me so I think being prepared for the week will bring you a lot of peace πŸ˜‰

      Thanks for the tips. The bit about the phone in the living room is not possible unless I buy a new alarm clock. I have however been turning off the WiFi on it the last couple of nights. Need to really get into a routine. Sigh. I did get more sleep the last couple of nights but it’s obviously going to be a work in progress.

    Oh just reading your plan made me sleepy. I don’t know how you manage it! Swimming really makes me sleepy but then I don’t have much stamina. DO share how this plan works out πŸ™‚

      Lol Maddie…well, I haven’t started swimming yet. Will be looking into doing so after my break. But when I swim, I won’t be going to the gym those days.

    I’ve been hearing great things lately about how taking magnesium, or melatonin, are great for helping you to sleep – might help prevent you waking up during the night?

      My GP did mention melatonin and suggested taking vitamin d supplements. Which I have started. Part of the waking up is stress related, part is checking my phone and partly the cats!

    I am like you. Get up at 4.30 and sleep by 9.30. Thats my schedule over the week. On weekends, the max the brat lets me sleep is about 6.30! so no sleeping in for me πŸ™‚
