On being a regular

It’s been two-and-a-half weeks since I returned back to work. Two-and-a-half weeks since I started my new routine in an effort to get more sleep. And with a few tweaks since that post, it’s been working fantastically so far. Touch wood. I wake up at 5-5:15 each morning and hit the gym by 6 {at the very latest}. Work out till about 7 and head straight to work. Yes, I shower at work which makes things very convenient. Anyway, I must add something to this.

I don’t really go straight to work.

I take a slight detour on the way to work. Past a coffee shop. To grab a cup of coffee.

It’s a small and funky espresso bar in Penshurst, a suburb I drive through to get to work: Checkpoint Charlie Espresso Bar.

To start the morning with a cup of coffee...bliss

To start the morning with a cup of coffee…bliss

I first had a coffee there en route to my Jenolan Caves trip when I picked up a couple of people from Penshurst station and we grabbed coffee from there for the ride. And coffee snob that I am, I was hooked. I went back there on my way to Port Stephens. And then decided I’d stop on the mornings to work after a workout. So far, it’s been working well.

Barely a few days after going in regularly, the lovely owners of the espresso bar remembered my order. Skim cappuccino without sugar. It made me feel special. I’m sure it’s something they do with most of their customers which in addition to the great coffee must keep people going back. I’ve never been a regular at any place. I think it’s something I used to fantasise about from the days of watching sitcoms like Friends and Seinfeld. Having that one place where you are a regular. Where they start on your order the minute you walk in the door. Where people know your name. Where you talk about more things than just the weather. Where you can laugh about a few things while waiting for your cuppa. I think though that I have apparently become such a regular that this morning, I think I can have my coffee without paying for it. This morning after a chat and getting my coffee, I walked away without paying for it! And V forgot to ask me for it too! I was almost near my car when I realised and ran back. Sigh!

I find that my mornings are so much more positive. Not just because of the gym workout and the caffeine. But also because I get to chat to two friendly and fun people who help keep my spirits up. And who make bloody good coffee!!

How about you? Are you a regular at a place?

Do share your experiences.

Until next time,

Cheers!!!

    Nice!

Not a food joint.. but a travel agency. When I was working in Aurangabad, I used to travel a lot to Bombay on weekends. I used to book my ticket through the same agency everytime, in the same bus. They were right across the road. After they got used to me, every time I called them, told my name and date when I wanted to travel on, the guy would simply say – Yes I will book. He knew where I was going and which bus I wanted. And if I was late, they would nicely wait for me. That was some nice treatment for a single girl in a strange city.

During my two short months of internship, I used to frequent a small snack stall every evening, which was bustling at all hours. I’d ask for my favourite combination, and always requested them to make it mild (I get the sniffles if I eat too spicy -_- ). After the first week, I didn’t have to “place an order” again…the owner knew exactly what I’d come for 🙂
