Out and About

My first ever camping trip

This weekend has been amazing. I went on my first ever camping trip, thereby crossing out one more thing on my 30 by 30 list. As part of one of the meetup groups, we hiked from Victoria Falls to Govetts Leap in the Blue Mountains, camping overnight at Acacia Plains. There were 10 of us and I knew 2 of them from previous hikes. We started at Victoria Falls lookout and descended to the valley with some incredible views of rainforest, mountains, creeks and falls. The adventures were quite amusing as our organiser, M‘s GPS occasionally decided it wouldn’t work and we were unsure about the track. No harm done though. The walk took its toll on me and a few others. Me because of the downhill…it really hurts my knees and ankles {I need to see a podiatrist soon!!} We started to get a bit worried that the sun would set and we wouldn’t reach our campsite in time. Especially asย Mย kept telling us “another 3 kms” ๐Ÿ˜›

We reached the campsite just before sunset. Set up our tents. {I borrowed mine from M} We got some water from the nearby river to cook, freshened up a bit and then headed to a spot for dinner. We had a camp fire going in a bit and gathered around to cook our food. I’d got some wine as had another person and we shared with a couple more who wanted some. I cooked some couscous and added some veggies to it for my dinner and it was amazingly enjoyable. There is something so magical about sitting around a camp fire, cooking a meal and eating it out of the pot. Numbers dwindled as people headed off to bed until in the end there were only 6 of us. We eventually headed off at 10. I wasn’t sure how I’d go sleeping in the tent. I’d borrowed a sleeping mat from my friendย N and a sleeping bag from a colleague at work. I was fine in terms of comfort. Apart from my left knee hurting like mad. But I did wake up about 4 to 5 times in the middle of the night thanks to an animal walking around my tent. I had visions of bears, foxes and dingoes. Only to be told in the morning that bandicoots are quite common!

I was up at 5 a.m. and yes, I used the ‘toilet’ in the best possible way. Probably the only thing I wasn’t a fan of. I also got some great views by the valley of fog on the top of the mountains. After breakfast, filling up our water, we set off for the final stretch. My knees still felt the pressure every time we descended. But luckily most of the final bit was uphill. So my thighs took the brunt which was better. With some beautiful views of the Govetts Leap falls, we eventually made it back to the top by around 1 p.m. Exhausted but happy.

And needless to say, I am so going back! I have got tips from the regulars about where to buy some things like camp stoves and tents as well as where to look for bargains. I can’t believe I have never experienced camping outdoors before. The night sky, the company, the fire, the laughter…all so wonderful. Most of all, just being able to get away from it all was incredible. No phone reception meant no connection with the outside world. And yes, despite being attached to my phone and internet at other times, these hikes and camps are my relief and I don’t experience any withdrawal symptoms whatsoever.

I’ll leave you with some pictures from our hike and camp:

As I’m about to head off to bed, I still have sore hips from carrying a backpack weighing about 10–11 kgs. I have sore knees and ankles and thighs. But most of all, I have some amazing memories and a big smile on my face. And of course, lots more camps to look forward to!

Until next time,

Cheers!!!

Wow, this sounds like such an adventure ๐Ÿ˜€ I hope your knee doesn’t give you a lot of trouble. I used to “go camping” too…on the terrace. In real tents ๐Ÿ˜‰ It’s still a lot of fun!

It was Vivienne! I’m hoping the knee isn’t too bad either…it’s still a bit sore today though the rest of my body is fine. Think I need to strengthen the ligaments around the knees! Haha…that’s so cute about camping on the terrace…never did that!
