My first time drunk

…was almost a decade ago.

cheers

I was 19 and had completed my B.A. exams. A few close friends and I had decided we would go to Goa to celebrate the end of our torturous exciting 3 years of college. Somehow, what started off as being the 4 of us girls eventually ended up being a party of 10. Which included my 14 year old sister {Don’t ask me how that happened!}.

Anyway, in the month of April — which by the way, is sweltering hot — we embarked on our very first trip without our parents. By train to Goa. For a week. The plan was to mainly relax and we had rooms booked in this resort owned by my friend M‘s uncle. Which was close to the beach. Back in those days though, I was very self-conscious of my body and figured I was just going to lounge about indoors or by the pool. Doing nothing.

On the last day/evening of the trip, some of us decided to have a drink. You should probably know that prior to that, I had only had a beer once. At a friend’s 18th. {And the odd sips from my dad}. For the very first time though, I drank vodka. With orange juice. And lemonade. I was doing all right until my friend’s boyfriend suggested bottoms-up. And in all my wisdom, I sculled down three-quarters of a glass {yeah, we were classy!} of vodka and lemonade. From there, I moved to happy tipsy state. But the night wasn’t over. We all later met up in one of the rooms and continued to drink. Well, not my sister or M {who doesn’t drink}. We had some tequila shots. Which I thoroughly enjoyed. And some more vodka.

By the end of the night though, I was well and truly drunk. And I learnt that I am not a happy drunk. I was a depressed drunk. You see, my friend and her boyfriend had an argument and for some reason, in my drunken state, I believed I was responsible and started to cry and apologise. My sister and M eventually put me to bed and I guess I passed out.

In the morning, I woke up with a MASSIVE hangover. Back then, I knew stuff-all about how to avoid hangovers or what to do when you are hungover. Everyone else was more than happy to offer pearls of wisdom.

Drink coffee. Did not work.

Throw up. Did not work.

Drink tomato juice. Did not fucking work!

Eat chocolate. Really?

We were to leave that morning. And embark on an almost day-long journey in a hot and humid train back home. I was nauseous and in a whole lot of pain throughout the trip. Despite the pain killers. I swore my sister to secrecy — she was not to tell our parents that I got drunk or she would die a slow and painful death. Once I was over being hungover.

On the journey as I reflected back at my depressed drunken state and my current crappy state, I vowed I’d never ever get drunk again.

I have continued to make that vow every now and then for the past decade.

Except now I do know what helps prevent a hangover or even cure one.

Oh, and when I did get home, my sister didn’t tell my mum anything. I did! Yeah, for some weird reason, the minute I met her I blurted out how I’d gotten drunk. For the very first time. Go figure.

What about you? When was your first time drunk?

Do share!!!

Until next time,

Cheers!!!

Mine wasn’t as adventurous as yours, though just as undignified, and similar in the sense that I wasn’t a happy drunk, but a big crying sook! http://bit.ly/17YMg9h

I was about 17? We hung out on a pier and drank a spirit of some kind. Was not hungover afterwards, because I didn’t really drink that much to begin with. I’m a cheap drunk, and a happy drunk, providing I stay sensible with the amount of alcohol I drink!

Oh! I remember mine! I was 17, dressed as a pirate at a pirate party and it only took a shot or two. It was fun and silly and the boy I liked so much kissed me and that was perfect. But I felt terrible the next day! I didn’t tell my parents I had drunk alcohol, but I think dad knew cos he bought me a bottle of lemonade (our family’s cure-all) and told me to take nap. Little did he know, I couldn’t nap – I was buzzing on that kiss still!

YES. Depressed drunk. Can relate to that.
But what do you think prevents a hangover? For me it’s drinking MASSES of water during and after. Only thing that works. Or, of course, not drinking alcohol……

Best way to not get a hangover to keep downing water.
    Try that.
