Words mean so much

Compliments. When given genuinely, they can mean so much. They can brighten your day. They can lift your spirit. I have been working on my compliment-giving skills in the past couple of years and have gotten better at receiving them. It has become easier to notice things about people in order to be able to compliment them. However, a lot of it is still based on things that are easily observable {such as someone’s outfit} as compared to the more understated things about people. But I’m working on it.

When asked to think back on the best compliment I’ve ever received, I found it a difficult task. Not because I don’t remember compliments but because it’s hard to categorise them. I have been fortunate enough to be complimented on being intelligent and smart {as a woman, I treasure those more than the ones based on looks!}, having a nice handwriting or the clothes I wear/how I might look on some days. But recently, I received a compliment from an unwitting source in an unwitting manner.

Last week, a client of mine was being reviewed by our consultant. I have been seeing this client since September on a weekly basis and she continues to think that her problems are not a major issue. But she attends sessions regularly. Consequently, our consultant asked the client why, if she thought she has no problems, does she continue to attend. And what this client said blew me away.

“I like coming here because when I’m here, it’s like I’m not crazy”

To me, that was a compliment. Telling me that I was someone she trusted enough and with whom she felt like she was actually being listened to. And more importantly, being validated. It has been something I have been trying hard to do with my clients and I had been feeling like I was not helping her much. But this comment was validation for me that she was noticing some changes. Even if it was that for once a week for an hour, she didn’t feel crazy.  Yes, it is my job. And I don’t expect compliments at all. But sometimes, on a tough day {or after a tough few months!}, it’s nice to know that what you are doing is worthwhile.

I care about a lot of my clients and sometimes, I take them home with me. This was one client I thought about for hours after the session. I worried. I got angry with the world at the unfairness it had dealt her. I felt sad at her pain. But apparently, she still finds coming to see me useful. So all I can hope for is that we continue to move forward.

So yes, if I had to choose a wonderful compliment, this would have to be the one for now. It may not be in the true form of a compliment but to me, it was the best thing ever. It brightened up my day. It made me smile. And it gave me hope.

I was like this before.. I wouldn’t be able to express openly, tell people that their dress was nice, or they did a good work etc. But now I compliment openly. Rather to my near and dear ones, I hug too…while complimenting.. I think I’ve become expressive that ways!

most memorable compliment…considering i have a weak memory, I’ll tell one that I got yesterday… after a huge fight with my friend..She said, “you so wonderful always and therefore you are important to me and so i will ask for your presence in my life.. I don’t need you…need is a small word.. I WANT you!” 😉

    i almost did a bhangra… virtual bhangra 😀

    I loved this post!! 🙂 : )

I shell out compliments like anything to my friends. I criticize too. So kinda balance it out I guess. I read this post and was thinking about the best compliment. The compliment I loved the most is when my sister and two of my cousins complimented on my writing and also when my bestest friend sent me a marriage invitation through mail and she wrote why she valued me so much. These two I will never ever forget. 🙂 🙂
I hope you keep getting such compliments in near future.. 🙂 🙂

That sounds like a lovely compliment indeed. And I agree with you when you say you prefer to be complimented on your intelligence, although I won’t deny that I love hearing the ones on physical appearance too 😉 Loved the post.

IT’s true. Words mean a lot and a compliment can literally catapult you over the moon. And as for what your client said ” We need more clients like those in the world”
