H is for Holidays #atozchallenge

holidays

My concept of holidays was a tad screwed up for years! Maybe it’s because we never really had proper holidays while growing up. When we lived in Oman for 5 years, holidays involved going back to India for a month in summer. Spending ‘holidays’ with extended family is not really a holiday in my opinion. After moving to India, I think as a family, we had two holidays in 10 years. Yes, two. And I went on two others with my friends.

Since coming to Australia at 21, I have been a bit stingy with holidays. The first three years it was because I was a poor student and couldn’t really afford proper holidays. Over the next three years post my studies, I did travel up to Coffs Harbour, Forster, Port Macquarie and Hervey Bay — just for a week. That’s what most holidays here have been — a week long. I have also been back to Bombay for about 3 weeks a couple of times in the last 9 years. But that in itself requires a holiday after returning home!

In 2012, I ended a long-term relationship and did not really have a proper holiday {apart from fitting in Cairns, Brisbane and Melbourne in a week when the family was here!}. Consequently I was burnt out in 2013. Which forced me to take a break. For the first time ever, I went away on a holiday by myself and it was the best thing ever. I learnt just how much I needed this in addition to weekends away and camping trips. I needed at least a week on my own to get my shit together. To recuperate from the busy-ness that is life.

Call it a first world problem but it is so essential to take a break from our regular monotony whether your love your job like I do or not. It made me wonder how my dad coped without a proper holiday for 8 years! To this end, I decided last year that I was going to take a break ever so often.

I have been fortunate to have a few weekends with friends at Kiama, Hyam’s Beach and more recently, up the Central Coast. But I also have plans to go away for a couple of weeks by myself on a road trip down the NSW South Coast and later in December hiking the Overland track in Tasmania with friends and also sight-seeing for a few days after. In 2015, my plan is to visit Canada {where my sister resides} for the very first time and cover a few states in the US in the process. It will be a longer holiday given the time it takes to get there and back!

Some people may think holidays and breaks are over rated. I know I used to.

But now I know it is an essential part of life. To travel. To clear my mind. To be able to come back to my day job rejuvenated.

What do you do for holidays? Do you travel or stay home?

Do share!

Love travelling for the holidays! Although one of the things I’ve noticed is that you end up being more tired on your holidays than when you’re staying at home…
But I still haven’t reduced the amount of travel although I must admit staying at home doing nothing is also becoming a great option to me!

My husband travels so much for his job that he rarely wants to go anywhere when he is off. I want to go places though! Lots of times we haven’t went because of the money. This year we have set some money back so we could take some short trips with our kids this summer. I am really looking forward to it and can’t wait! β™₯

Oh I definitely know a thing or two about needing a holiday!! Am sure you’ve heard the mantra that teachers get 12 weeks holiday a year, but truth be known, much of that time is spent finalising things from the previous term and preparing for the term ahead. I try and make sure I have something to look forward to each set of school holidays so that I amke sure that I have actually had a holiday! Hence, I am heading to the Gold Coast tomorrow for 4 nights and CAN”T WAIT!!!

Holidays can mean different things for different people, no? πŸ™‚ I like your reference to the “first world problem” . I think there is lot more to it there, if we start analyzing it (and that you would really like, PB, given the nature of work you do!) I say this also because of my experience having lived in the so-called first world for more than 14 years and making a conscious decision to move back to the so-called third world. And I say thank god that in many parts of India and in many parts of the Indian collective psyche, this whole “holidaying” thing hasn’t become as commercial as in some of the other “advanced” countries. But that’s just my personal opinion πŸ™‚

I love holidays. It gives my brain time to recharge. I usually take two weeks. I’ve been really lucky and have been all over the place in the last several years; honeymoon in Belize, graduation trip to Japan, Disney World, Las Vegas. This year, I’m a poor student, so I’m going to have a stay-cation (stay at home). I live in Canada. Where in Canada/USA do you plan to visit?

I usually go HOME for holidays – and since that include two home-countries it can be pretty busy… many people to see and visit.. Fortunately, some times, usually in shorter breaks we go on holiday holiday – YEY! I had to laugh reading your words about “going home to Bombay for holiday, and then needing a break after that” .. HA ha – holidaying home can be exhausting.. Like my son said after a busy holiday week back home.. “aaa, I so need a holiday from this holiday”:-) In enjoyed this post so much – could totally relate …

Oh! Holidays are soooo necessary. Somehow, we are tuned to think of holidays as elaborate vacations. But a short jaunt could do the mind and body loads of good as well. Even if it means driving an hour out of town to relax and unwind. Nice to know your experiences. Incidentally, I’ve written about holidaying too! Good luck with the rest of the challenge!
