What is your passion?

passion

This question isn’t new to this space. I am a big believer in doing what you are passionate about. I think life can degenerate into mundane existence when we are doing things day in and day out that we are not passionate about. Let me make this clear — our days don’t have to be filled only with things we are passionate about. If that were the case, my house would probably never get cleaned!

I am referring to things that take up most of our waking hours. Like work. We spend 8 hours of our day at work. That’s 40-48 hours a week. That’s 2080-2496 hours a year. That’s a lot of time to spend on something you are not passionate about. I hear you when you say things like “I need to make money. My passion doesn’t bring me that.” I hear you. I have bills to pay too. I have a mortgage. I guess I am fortunate that I love my job. And writing. And I try and make time for both. One from 8:30 to 5. The other for a few hours in the evenings.

The thing is, even if your passion doesn’t match up to your earnings, I am sure you can find work that you could be passionate about and therefore earn money too. A close friend of mine told me ages ago how she wished she had done a degree in something where she interacted with people rather than sat behind a desk doing computer code stuff. That’s what I mean. She still continues to work on computer-based projects and still continues to wish she were doing human resource management instead. And you know what? She would be bloody good at HR work.

Most people say they don’t know what they are passionate about. That they haven’t found their calling yet. Here’s how I like to conceptualise it: If someone put enough money into your bank account to pay your bills and for your groceries and entertainment, what would you be doing? When you can answer that, you will know what you are passionate about. It’s money that holds us back.

Your passion may be writing. And in order to pay the bills, you may have to do it in addition to your day job.

Your passion may be baking. You may have to start as an apprenticeship and cut corners while working another job.

Your passion may be designing. You may have to do some freelance work while keeping your day job.

Basically, you may need to work hard to set up your passions as your primary means of earning. But in the end, it will be worth it. Because then, it will seem like you are hardly working.

Monday mornings won’t seem difficult ever again! {So maybe that’s a slight exaggeration!}

So tell me, what is your passion?

Do share!

    So true and yet so hard! lol! I’m doing things I’m passionate about. I’m working on my novel and I’m creating an outdoor science educational day for my daughters’ schools. I’ll be tromping through the woods and rotating over 300 children through science hands-on learning stations that I’ve spent months creating and organizing. Not to mention all the volunteers to coordinate, busing, materials, transporting all the items to and from the state park where it will be held. (pant, pant) But I’m passionate about it! I’ll just be comatose for the entire week following it!

    I guess I am passionate about writing πŸ™‚ You know me πŸ˜‰ And, seeing as how most of my waking hours are spent doing housework and taking care of family, I am glad that I get the time I do, to make the most of my passion. My other passion is music. I love to sing and in the last year, I started teaching music. The satisfaction that brings is unparalleled. The days I sing are the happiest days of my life. I agree with your statement, ‘ if somebody put money in your account, what would you do?’ Fortunately, I like being a freelance writer and that my bills are otherwise paid. But I would love to go back to teaching English some day.

    Excellent post. Please allow me to quote from a post I recently did when I teach on public speaking

    People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. That bears repeating. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. It does not matter what you are speaking about, do it with passion. You cannot find passion in a book. You cannot find passion in any store. No website sells passion. Your passion comes from within and people will recognize it very quickly.

    It’s always annoying to me how “creative” arts are so badly paid- is a song that makes you happy or a novel that brings you joy any less important than computer software? What’s always worst is jobs, especially internships in creative fields, are unpaid. Would a aerodynamics major have an unpaid internship? Why should any field be any different?

    Grumbling aside, for me its: travel, reading, and teaching. Quite stereotypical. I’m glad my work ties in with my interests. I know other people are not so lucky.
