A to Z Challenge Life lessons

Y is for Yearning to Learn #atozchallenge

When was the last time you learnt something new? When you felt that urge to develop your skills? To grow? To oil those brain cells?

yearntolearn

During my university days, I had a one-track mind. All I learnt was psychology. And while I love what I do, in a way, this was quite restrictive. Once I was done with uni, I just wanted a break from studying. But it didn’t last long.

I discovered other things to learn. I dabbled with learning to play the guitar. I spent a whole year attending creative writing classes which I absolutely loved. I tried to learn Italian for a couple of terms and only stopped because I wasn’t a fan of remaining indoors on a weeknight and limiting my social options. 😛 I continue to have that itch to learn new things.

Currently, photography is on the list. Writing continues to exist on my list of things to develop. Psychological skills are always there to continue my professional development. And then there’s the physical things — learning pilates, some sport, maybe yoga. I love learning to cook new dishes. Try out new recipes.

In short, yes, I love learning. Learning keeps my life full and worth while.

It keeps life interesting.

And keeps my brain ticking.

Do you enjoy learning?

Do share something you learnt recently!

I guess I would say I am always learning. How to be a better parent, wife and friend seem have never ending learning curves! And I’m always learning about blogging and I recently learned about twitter. Learning new stuff feels overwhelming to me a lot of the time.

I live a life centered around rampant learning. We unschool our two children, ages 12 and 9. Learning is like the air we breathe, and we’re all learning, always.

Today, we learned that setting up a trampoline is a LOT harder than it seems. I learned more about Xerox machines, and a little about quilting. I learned about my “X” character, Xavier. I learned that there were still T’Pol and Trip fan videos I hadn’t seen yet…that one made me especially happy.

And I learned about you, and that I really like your blog! =D

Your post today bears strong similarity with mine…similar ideas expressed differently. It is indeed important to keep learning and awakening, developing new faculties, capabilities within us. Sometimes though we don’t have to formally enroll to learn something new, if we can keep that attitude of learning life by itself gives us plenty of opportunities and experiences to help us grow and learn.

Awww, I just retired from 33 years of teaching and STILL crave the wonderful writing and reading workshops. Thank goodness I have friends in the school district who allow me to be part of some of the workshops! Learning with others is amazing ! You are so right – it’s part of living! A huge part of living!
