My Ohm outside my home: Staying calm at work

I spend 5 days a week working from one of my work places. 8 hours a day. Sometimes more. That’s 40 hours a week. And given that my work in general can be stressful, it’s a good thing I’ve made my space at work, well, my space. Here’s a peek at my work space:

So I’m a tad obsessed with Ian Kenny…

This is my desktop at work. So yes, I am obsessed with Ian Kenny. But that’s not the only thing that rejuvenates me at work. See the other stuff there? The fish, dolphin, cat, frog, shells and well, the piece saying ‘Live’? It’s a reminder of things I love. It’s no secret I love the water and everything about it and the shells and sea creatures are there to remind me of the same. The cat figurine reminds me of my cats {because I’ve been too lazy to get photos of them printed!}. And well, LIVE — that’s been my motto for the year. I found it last year on my trip to Port Stephens when I had epiphanies of different kinds — the most important one being about living my life.

My wall of inspiration and gratitude

On the wall right next to my computer are all of these. I have words that inspire me including moving out of my comfort zone and the Holstee manifesto. I also have postcards sent by friends to remind me of travel, cards from clients for Christmas or to just say thanks which are reminders why I do the work I do and some drawings from my clients. {The yellow sheet is a birthday list of my colleagues…}

Having all this around reminds me of my happy places. Of things I am grateful for. Of my life beyond work. It keeps getting updated every year of course. But it keeps me relaxed. On a difficult day, all I have to do is look at any of these and remind myself of why I do the work I do. Or even just remember that work is just a part of my life.

What about you? What does your space look like? How do you stay calm at work?

Do share!

For me too it is important to personalize my workspace/desk…and when I had a big office it was filled with things that were important to me in some way or the other. But now that I work from home, my entire workspace (home) is fully personalized 🙂 But even there too I like to have few doo-dads near my work area where I spend most of my time…some pictures, some flowers, etc….

It does make a big difference when you have your space becomes personalised, doesn’t it Beloo? I didn’t do much to my space in my previous jobs and I think it’s because deep down I knew I wouldn’t stay there long. In my current one, I’ve been for 3.5 years with no plans of moving any time soon…

I have nothing to call my space outside home. So I guess I am often lacking motivation ..

It certainly helps to personalise a space outside of home…definitely in terms of motivation. Maybe you should try and find a space you can call your own…

Always wanted to ask, but never quite got there? What do you work as PB?

I remember reading some where that you work as a pyschoanalyst? Is that right?

    Don’t kill me now please!

Nooo…. you haven’t read my ‘about me’ section. *sobs hysterically*

Ok…just kidding. I’m a child psychologist Soumya… 🙂 So yes, the drawings are by some kids and teens I see…and work can get stressful so it’s nice to come back to my desk after seeing clients.

oh boy my work places looks like a mess .. Well I did put a couple of pictures earlier .. this is how it looks, there are two screens attached to a desktop on my right and then there are two laptops , with an extra screen , so I am surrounded with screens ..

I do have a few bits and pieces …

I am generally very very calm at work but sometimes the lid blows and then people know even the next door people know I am angry and everyone leaves me alone 🙂

Oh my space can be very messy too…every 6 months I do a major clean up. Those photos were taken around Christmas time when I had no clients and was cleaning up my desk! 😀 At other times, there’s always papers to shred and books to read….thanks for sharing the story about your work space Bikram!

I don’t understand people who don’t personalize their work desks. I have a photo of me and hubby, some funny calendars and my own coffee cup. Makes it more bearable!

I still haven’t got photos up…too lazy to print them! 😛 But you know what Sarah…this is the first workspace I’ve personalised so much…I think I never felt at ‘home’ in the others and deep down knew I wouldn’t stay long. This is longest I’ve been at a workplace…almost 4 years now. Maybe that’s why people don’t personalise it??
