5 years of home ownership

Today marks 5 years since I moved into my very own unit. 5 years since I’ve had a mortgage on a single income. 5 years since I called this place home.

Capturing the sunrise during a run on Tom Ugly's Bridge

Capturing the sunsetΒ during a run on Tom Ugly’s Bridge

Home lies in a beautiful area south of Sydney and is a 2 bedroom unit. It is a 10 to 12 minute drive to the beach and is also close to the world’s second oldest national park. It’s an area I feel completely comfortable in even though none of my friends actually live in this area. I adore the beach, the national park and the laid-back lifestyle. I love that it is away from the hustle and bustle of the city and yet, not too far as to not be able to enjoy a night out on occasions.

Each day as I drive across Tom Ugly’s bridge when I head home from work, it’s akin to entering paradise. The stress of the day melts away. Home beckons.

I still remember the time when I was house-hunting. I had decided to take advantage of the first home owner’s grant and all I knew was that I was looking for a unit in the Shire. I remember spending time after work, during my lunch break, my weekends attending open house inspections. There were a few units I liked but way out of my price range. And then I chanced upon my unit.

I almost didn’t make it to the open inspection which was on a Saturday at 2. I had taken time off between work and had already viewed three other places. I had to be back at Croydon at 3 for an appointment. I was pushing it. But at the last minute, I thought I’d take the chance and quickly view this place.

I fell in love.

It is an old red-brick building and the place just felt like home when I walked in.

I rushed back to work and called the real estate soon after my appointment with an offer. As I drove home at around 5, my phone rang and I pulled over to the side of the road. It was the real estate. They informed me that the owners had accepted my offer. That was in May 2009. By August, everything went through {they’d had tenants and problems with their bank and I went away in July}. I picked up the keys on the 6th of August 2009 and officially moved in on the 8th of August 2009.

Into an empty unit with no furniture apart from a single bed and a desk.

Today, it’s a different story.

I’ve made it home. Sure, there is still a lot I can do but I’m mindful of expenses.

I still think I was extremely fortunate to have entered the property market when I did. Lady luck definitely played a part.Β And for that, I will be ever so grateful. 5 years of home ownership have seen me tightening the purse strings and needing to have a housemate. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything else!

How long have you been in your current home?

Do share the story of your home with me!Β

***Linking with Grace for FYBF***

Until next time,

Cheers!!!

We are coming up to 5 years in ours but are preparing to sell and rent back in the inner burbs. Our locale is just not for us and we have never settled here. It is a lovely home but just not our home. So glad you love yours though!

You were lucky, Sanch, to get in when you did as Sydney has become ridiculously overpriced (apparently only Manhattan is higher now!?) I love the Shire, with its sweeping, tree-lined streets. We’re practically neighbours, I am ten mins north of Tom Ugly’s – tucked away in Oatley…my own little piece of paradise… πŸ™‚

My family’s home is my real home. Since I went to college up to now that I’m working, it’s been my real home. Away from it, I had been renting rooms and/or spaces mostly at dorms and boarding houses and going home mostly on weekends. Now that my parents are gone, it’s going to be where my future family will live. Well, at least, for the time being. I’m currently going through tough times with it because the last typhoon really did damage to it (other houses had it worse) — I kind of got teary-eyed once a bit remembering that my parents built it. I can’t imagine leaving it, but someday, I will have to…

Congratulations! Home ownership is a good thing and I hope you enjoy many more years to come in your lovely abode. πŸ™‚ One of the biggest regrets hubby and I have is not purchasing a home when we were young. It could have been long paid off by now. Instead, we waited until we were were older and are striving to get rid of that mortgage before retiring.

I know that exact feeling. I was living 4 hours from Toowoomba when I was looking to buy my first home. I had lined up 4 house inspections one Saturday morning but none of them felt right, until one of the Real Estate agents told me one that had only just come on the market and hadn’t been advertised yet, we went around and it ticked none of my boxes but I fell in love. I made an offer which was accepted that afternoon! So of course I was totally devastated when I had to leave, let tenants move in and watch it turn into something I had no choice but to sell. πŸ™
