Getting a summer body and why it annoys me

origin_1115807983

If I hear someone else tell me what I should be doing to get a “summer body”, I am going to scream. Or punch them in the face. With summer fast approaching down here in the southern hemisphere, I have heard time and again about what we all should be doing to get that summer body. I hear it most days at my gym {which I love} where we get told time and again that summer is approaching and we need that summer body, and consequently, we need to work harder. I see articles in fitness and lifestyle mags giving ustips on how to get that summer body in 12 to 28 days {I didn’t want to link them, but I had to make my point!}

This annoys me on so many levels.

  • What is a summer body anyway? Is it a six-pack? Is it toned arms and legs? Is it a flat stomach? Is it a body that fits in a bikini or a budgie smuggler? Who decides what a summer body is? So many questions. And no ‘right’ answer.
  • What if someone is happy with their body the way it is? There may be people who don’t have the six-pack or the toned arms or legs. Does that mean they shy away from summer and stay indoors? Or does that mean they have to be covered up from head to toe because they don’t have that ‘summer body’ that the media is keen to harp on about?
  • What if I wanted my ‘summer body’ in all seasons? I must admit that I would like a six-pack and I love toned arms and legs {still working on those legs here!} but I don’t want them just for summer. I want them throughout the year. And while the six-pack may be a bit of a vanity thing, I exercise the way I do to keep healthy and fit and strong. Not just for summer. By perpetuating this whole ‘summer body’ agenda, it’s almost like saying we shouldn’t bother working out the rest of the year and only do so for summer.
  • With so many women and men battling body image problems and eating disorders, you would think there would be more responsible individuals out there who at least monitor promotions around getting a summer body. Trying to work for a summer body only encourages yo-yo dieting, starvation diets, over-exercising and just focusing on the short term rather than on long-term goals like a healthy lifestyle.

I wish people would be more responsible and promote a healthy lifestyle over short-term goals like summer bodies or fitting into wedding or bridesmaid dresses. To be honest, I have a reasonably flat stomach and toned arms. But I have my curves and I have days when I am unhappy with my body. And I wonder, is it because of listening to all this crap about how our bodies should be? Realistically, I know I will never be lean and slender; I will always have the curves on my hips and thighs. Sure, at the moment they may be more muscly but they are never going to be what I yearn for. Does that make it non-summer-body-like?

In the end, I wish we could all be happy with our bodies and flaunt it proudly in summer, winter, spring or autumn the way we want.

Are you as annoyed as me about summer bodies? Do you do fad diets or exercise regimes just for that?

Do share your thoughts!

    Yeah, it pisses me off too. Plus, the Aussie summer body is apparently all about being able to burn as much skin at once as possible! Seriously, the burka is a good summer option for our summer sun!

      Erm, I must admit I’m guilty of wanting a tan. Even though I am naturally brown. {It’s more of a rebellious thing I reckon because Indians like to be light-skinned}

      And thanks for the no follow thing…I had to google how to do it and might have to do it for several other things I’ve linked in the past.

    I am 100% with you – I grow so tired of seeing the onslaught of women’s magazines berating us for being so daring as to hide away our apparently grotesque “winter bodies” when we should most definitely be hitting the gym and starving ourselves and strategically pouring on the fake tan so we can hit the beach without feeling ashamed of ourselves. It’s such a load of rubbish!

    Little C and I recommend Formula 1 races late at night. There’s no need to sleep when you can burn calories doing what you love. We think if everyone ran around like we did at night, they could have summer bodies yearround. 🙂

    Classic marketing. Make you feel inadequate so that you can become “whole” by buying what they’re selling. I try to catch ’em when they’re doing it so I don’t fall for it!

    Maybe I’m just getting old, but I think the trend is moving away from plastic and skinny and moving toward natural and strong, and no one shape is the ideal.

    Exactly! A summer body is a body that is living during the summer. Kind of like a bikini body is a body wearing a bikini. So many people have one idea in their head of what people should look like and it’s messed up! I exercise to feel strong and healthy. I train for races to do my best. I am in it for the long haul, for my health, and for the mental clarity I feel when I am active.

    While most of us worry about how we look occasionally…and sometimes frequently. But obsessing about our bodies and trying to get that perfect image, can lead to serious physical and emotional issues. Agree with you, staying fit and healthy throughout the year should be the mantra and it should not be restricted to some special occasions or seasons!

    Obsessing over your body is such a lame thing to do, that too by way of such fad diets and short cuts. If you want to do something for your body, make sure that it stays healthy.

    It is obsessively annoying isn’t it Sanch? I mean year-round, not just summer the gym, the media are hounding us women to look and feel a certain way. Instead, why don’t they have us appreciate and celebrate our bodies as they are amazing instruments and tools for creativity. That is, it’s amazing what we can all do with the bodies we have. Shame, guilt, fear, pain, and the like can thus be replaced with happiness, confidence, joy, and the like…wouldn’t that be a wonderful world with which we woman could live in? 😉 <3

    I just ignore these promotions on perfect body. It’s very stupid and insensitive. And like you I believe that promotion should be on healthy lifestyle rather than body.
    I love working out because it keeps me fit. I don’t want to be the person that pants after climbing 2 flights of stairs 😛 won’t help while hiking huh.
    My skin wrinkles in the sun, so beaches are a no no for me. Searching for some nice cool places to visit this summer. If you have anything in mind please suggest.

    I have been petite all my life… and I actually wish that I had a bit of curves on my hips at least… otherwise, I’m happy the way I am. Fat or slim, everyone gets it – I have been forever barraged by ‘why-don’t-you-eat-more’, why-don’t-you-eat-bananas-and-eggs, and all those weight gaining questions. It’s annoying sometimes, since it’s just plain hereditary for me to be slim… but back to the point, it’s good to be fit but one shouldn’t get carried away by the obsession of a ‘perfect body’.

    Maybe a summer body means getting a dehydrated look…? Just kidding.

    I personally would like a more lean body. But I know I will never have that supposed ideal bod. I am just slightly overweight, but overweight nonetheless, and it’s bound to get worse with age, maybe. I really just want a more healthy body right now and if a leaner body is a result of that, then thank you. If not, well, we do what’s best with what we have.

    Yep! Totally annoys the shite out of me!!! but for some reason it seems to work! I commented to a friend the other day about how busy the gym has become now it’s warmer…. (OK I was complaining as there is limited floor space at my gym and with the increase of people I was finding it hard to do my thang!), part of me thinks “Good on you for being active” but another part of me thinks “where were you all winter!” being healthy is a life long journey and shouldn’t be restricted or promoted for 3 months of the year!! grrrrrr

    It annoys me so much, especially the bikini ready articles. I think that we need to focus more on people feeling good in their skin, before shaming them because they aren’t what some people deem as ‘normal’.

    Great post! And you’re right – what constitutes a “summer body”??? I’ve decided I’m going to really concentrate on nutrition and my eating habits leading up to summer rather than go nuts on weight loss. It never works and only leads to disappointment. Above all, it’s not sustainable!
