Feminism Fodder

Feminism Friday: The first edition #FeminismFriday

Last weekend, the world celebrated International Women’s Day. As I blogged about it, a wonderful idea struck me. I could do a weekly series on the blog called Feminism Friday. I figured Feminism Friday would feature links to articles I’ve read during the week about discrimination against women {therefore, why we need feminism}, wins for gender equality {because we need to celebrate the victories}, as well as some posts by bloggers on the subject of feminism. I figured some weeks I could write a post of my own while other weeks, I could look for guest bloggers willing to write about feminism. The one thing I haven’t completely decided is whether to have a linky for your posts on feminism too. Your feedback on this would be greatly appreciated.

Feminism Friday

So to kick off the first week of Feminism Friday, quite obviously, with IWD on the 8th of March, the interwebs was filled with women – empowerment posts. I joined in one such link up over at Blog-a-Rhythm. You can check out 27 posts by bloggers across the globe on gender equality. In our own backyard, Q & A had its very first all-women panel. Would you believe I missed it because of uni? Yeah I only got home at about 10:20. Oh well, you can still read Clementine Ford’s views on the highs and lows of the first all-women panel.

There was also this post or rather, comment, on India’s response to banning the BBC documentary in the country by the Indian Homemaker that caught my eye. It’s so true about how Indians suddenly think it’s a matter of the country’s honour to not have their dirty laundry aired publicly to the world. I guess it’s similar to the surgeons’ association here in Australia. If you are a woman trainee, apparently the advice is to just take the sexual harassment for the sake of your career. Dr Caroline Tan spoke openly about sexism in Australian hospitals and how she has struggled with work since she spoke out. Amy from Handbag Mafia spoke out against a petition by this woman to allow Medicare to cover plastic surgery following giving birth.

I loved this article on how this Lebanese journalist, Rima Karaki, responded to a sheik who told her that it was beneath him to be interviewed by her, a woman {shock, horror!}. She pretty much showed him who was the boss! It was also heartening to read about how Jenna Price is shouting back at street harassers. 1 in 10 Australian woman is harassed while on the streets. While I must admit, I am fortunate to have not been harassed here so far, I know exactly what it’s like to be on that end thanks to growing up in India where you are subject to it on a daily basis. Finally, there was this interesting article in Catalogue magazine on Why women are finally allowed to be funny. It is an interesting point that was previously made by Tina Fey in one of her 30 Rock episodes. Liz tries to prove to Tracy that women can be just as funny as men in that episode. It’s ironic as well because Liz is the producer of TGS. I am yet to watch Parks and Recreation but I’m looking forward to getting the box set and binging on the same!

That’s all for the first edition of Feminism Friday. It hasn’t been without a few speed humps. I was hoping to schedule it for earlier today, but my internet provider had an outage yesterday evening and well, I couldn’t do anything about it! Murphy’s Law.

Have you got any good feminism blog posts or articles to share? Leave a link to them.

Did you watch the Q & A all-women panel? What did you think?

Do share!

Until next time,

Cheers!!!

An awesome idea Sanch and I look forward to reading your posts. I may share some links if I may. Some things I read today (1a) the prevalence of rampant rape at universities and (1b) in militaries and (2) via FB, how Jimmy Carter, a former United States President realized that a #1 incident in the world is the poor treatment and abuse of women and girls…something along those lines. <3
