On Morning Routines

morning

Earlier in the week, I read a post by Sonia asking about morning routines. She shared her routine and wrote about trying to fit some form of exercise in the morning for herself. It made me think about my morning routine. Most mornings, I feel a sense of deja vu. That’s because it’s pretty much the same thing on every weekday.

5:00 – Alarm goes off

5:05 – I get out of bed

5:15 – All dressed for the gym

5:25 – Toileting done

5:25 to 5:40 – Feed the cats, make my coffee, scull said coffee, brush teeth, grab my bags {lunch, gym and work}, head out

5:50 – Get to the gym

6:00 to 6:45 – Gym class {Bootcamp or X-trainer}

6:50 – Drive to work

7:15 – Arrive at work

7:15 to 7:45 – Shower and get dressed

7:45 to 8:00 – Breakfast and second coffee

8:00 – Start work {and continue till 5}

Sometimes, it feels like this endless cycle. Without fail, every second morning while driving to the gym, I find myself wondering about this routine. How it doesn’t seem to change. How I can do it automatically. And how, sometimes, I wish it were different. I feel like I am on the go from 5:25. There is no time to stop and smell the roses. Except, maybe when I have breakfast and catch up on emails.

I wish I could slow down. Spend some time writing in the morning perhaps. Or actually sip my coffee like I do on weekends rather than gulp it down. I can’t figure out what to do. I need my exercise. It keeps me sane. And I can’t imagine waking up earlier.

Which leaves me right where I started.

How do you do mornings?

Do share!

    My morning routine is fairly stable. It depends on where I am – if I’m at home or staying at my in-laws (I work an hour and a half away from home, with very long days so it’s easier to stay with them than it is to drive every day). At home during the week, I’m out of bed between 3:30-4:00 to shower and make the coffee and then write. Then I get in the car and head north. If I’m at the in-law’s, then I’m up by 5:00 for the same routine.

    My mornings aren’t my problem; the evenings are. I don’t sleep well so I’m usually up until about midnight. Sometimes 1:00. Which makes getting up more difficult.

      Oh wow…you’re up at 3:30-4?! I know what you mean by not sleeping well…my routines have become harder too since uni. Previously I used to go to bed by 930 to wake up by 5 but now, it’s almost 11 and it makes it so much harder to wake up. You probably only get about 3 to 5 hours of sleep which can’t be good.

    You’ve got quite a tough routine there Sanch. And I thought it was only I who had difficult mornings. Perhaps you could just just miss exercise on the odd day and relax for a change. I love my gym too but when i do take a day off it doesn’t feel too bad. I think it’s the change I like because the next day I’m all excited about going back. You do deserve a break.

      At least you have kids which could be why you are so busy in the morning. I can’t even blame kids for that! 😛

      But there are days I take time off from the gym but it results in getting late to work because I encounter a lot of traffic. I’m better off getting to work early!

    My morning is so different than yours. I am not even always out of bed by the time you get to work.

    I am only ever out of bed at 5 am on weekdays when there is school. I used to have a very regular workout routine where I would swim 5 days a week. Everything has taken a backseat now. I need to get out more and get off the Net more too! The guilt works both ways, though!

    Holy M! Aren’t you super organised!
    I agree though. Having a pattern and being organised with your morning regiment works really well.

    So sad that this morning is a school morning. Up at the crack of dawn – do my blog linking / commenting and then run, run, run all day until tonight when I can crash at 9pm. Not a moment to spare in my life with a large fam. 😀

    That sounds a lot like the routine I used to have. Nowadays it is different because I’m not heading off to work. I’m making a conscious effort to try and fit in some exercise every day at the moment!

    I wish I could make myself get up at 5am. Certainly mornings are not my favourite things until I have a cup of tea but I find I write better. Catch 22. Two little kids decide when I get up and that it usually 6am. At the moment my morning routine is their morning routine. 🙂

    My mornings are quite blissful these days 🙂 I get up at 6.30, wake up chirpy and get her ready by 8 for her school. Then I’ve full 4 hours for myself before I head out to pick her up from school, then drop her home and head to office and I’m there till 7 max.

    In those 4 hours in morning, I normally read, or sleep or do some office work and sometimes cook as well 🙂 so it is by choice that I pick up what I want to do 🙂

    Go girl, although I have to say I’m up at that hour not by choice but by my kids! I did used to get up that early when I didn’t have kids to head to the gym so I know the feeling. But don’t forget to have a rest every now and then x

    My kids are my alarm clock. I get them dressed first up, my youngest insists of dressing as soon as she’s up at the moment. I sneak in a cuppa tea, make breakfast for everyone and then sneak in a shower. With Izzy starting school this year, I’ve got it down pat. I’m enjoying a break from routine, holidays have just started here, so things are a little more relaxed.

    It can get a bit mundane at times can’t it!
    As I am currently unemployed (which sounds more dramatic than on leave) my mornings vary depending on where I am and what I am doing that day! Ads a little more excitement to the day but I do usually love routine so it takes some getting used to!

    I made a decision to stop waking to alarm clock about ten years ago – revolutionised my life. Even when I am catching the first flight of the day I have learned that my body clock is smarter than I give it credit for. These days I wake with the sun, roll out of bed, have a glass of water and start my sun salutations. They might only last for five minutes, sometimes 20, but it gives my brain some time to rise 🙂 Or I just sit and watch the water… I’m giving myself permission to be quiet and still 🙂
