Out and About

Sydney Comedy Festival: Neel Kolhatkar and Steen Raskopolous

I love stand-up comedies. This year, as part of the Sydney Comedy Festival, I managed to see two comedians. One who I have heard a lot about but never seen, and another who I saw for the first time last year and thought he was awesome.

Neel Kolhatkar

On Friday night, my friends and I went to see Neel Kolhatkar, an Aussie of Indian heritage and from the Shire {I think} at The Factory Theatre. He’s only 21 and a very clever guy. He takes the piss out of cultures and countries with very astute observations. He also focuses on pop culture a fair bit with a lot of satirical comments about music in particular. The best bit is his views on stereotypes: of races and gender. My view of him went up ten-fold when he declared being a feminist in one of his pieces and how as a male, if you try and support anything to do with women online, you get put down by a zillion ‘alpha-males’ and are trolled and called ‘pussy’ or ‘wimp’ or ‘fag’.  If you ever get a chance to see him, I’d highly recommend him. I also found this video of his which apparently went viral some years ago. It’s called Australia in 2 mins and I must admit, it pretty hilarious and politically incorrect!

On Saturday, we went to watch Steen Raskopoulos who I saw for the first time last year, once again at The Factory Theatre.

Steen Raskopoulos

He’s different to most stand-up comedians I watch because he does a lot of improv stuff and skits. His improv involves the audience — and not just those in the first two rows. He walks around the room and picks people too. He’s obviously quite witty as he even though he may have a few skits up his sleeve, in the end, he also goes with the audience. The best bit of yesterday’s act was him giving a speech as the mayor of the town and requiring an sign-language interpreter. Of course, the ‘interpreter’ was chosen from the audience and it was unbelievably funny. My stomach was hurting with all the laughter. He also does movie reviews by a Greek Orthodox Priest and reviewed Frozen yesterday. Once again, it’s amazingly funny. If you haven’t see him, you really must! Sharing a video from the Melbourne Comedy Festival of the Greek Orthodox priest.

I needed the laughs this weekend. I’ve had a few sad moments in my head. A lot of anxiety around my assignments. And I guess, I haven’t been coping too well. The laughs were great.

Do you enjoy stand-up comedy? Have you seen either of these guys before?

Do share!

Until next time,

Cheers!!!

I have seen some stand-up comedy in the form of improv as in musical improve. It’s a lot of fun and a barrel of laughs! 🙂 Haven’t seen either guys though Neel – well, great he considers himself a feminist as we women can certainly use more support from men. 😉 <3

I love stand up comedy and these comedians sound great but I would become a mumbling freak if any comedian picked me out of an audience! I’m going to try to find these guys on YouTube now!
