Writing

Writing my heart out

There is something therapeutic about writing. I spent most of my Sunday indoors, writing. Sure, it was my university assignments but the units I’m doing this semester are extremely interesting. I’m studying Feature Writing and Creative Nonfiction. I have realised that I enjoy it more than fiction. Or maybe, I’m just a little better at it than fiction. The more I write, the more I know I want to continue doing this.

I’ve noticed that writing is one of the few things that is keeping me sane. Even though work has been stressful and some relationships have been strained, when I write, I get excited and forget the world. I am happy. I am there. My already busy mind continues to be busy but this time, with stuff I enjoy. The ideas continue to brew right from the time I wake up till the time I fall asleep. What disappoints me is that I don’t have the time to do it all.

Some of the ideas sound great in my head but either due to lack of time or energy, I find I cannot execute them really well.

Currently for my creative nonfiction unit, we are working on a personal essay and I find that I have a gazillion ideas but must focus on just one. Yes, just one. But then there are all those other ideas waiting to be written about. I am constantly scouring magazines to see where I pitch both feature articles and creative nonfiction writing. I find them. And then I get consumed by self-doubt. Being super busy without too much down time probably feeds more into that self-doubt.

As a result, I’ve decided that I need time to write. To think. Without any distractions {apart from perhaps my kitties}. Until Christmas this year {which is only 3 months away, by the way}, I am taking every second Friday off work in the form of annual leave and some rostered days off to focus on my writing. I’m aware that the first few may be spent on university assignments but who’s to say something couldn’t come out of these? I also figured this way, I get to test the waters a bit and get out of my comfort zone. I’ll take some risks and the worst that could happen is that I get rejected and it goes nowhere. I will still get some time off for my mental wellbeing.

If all goes well, I hope to talk to my manager about the possibility of officially cutting down my days next year. Of course, there is no guarantee they will agree but it’s worth a try. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?

How are you going with your writing goals?

Do share!

***Linking with Corinne for September Challenge and Mia and Vashelle for Write or Die Wednesday. Also, I got this prompt from Write Tribe for their 100 words on Saturday but couldn’t enter it as I couldn’t stick to the word limit!***

Until next time,

Cheers!!!

Great stuff Sanch! I agree – you definitely need some dedicated time to write and create words out of ideas in your head. Well done on taking the time off and experimenting with what works for you. Hope it goes well and you find the direction you want πŸ™‚

I agree with you so much. Many times, I put my writing in the backburner because, I dont have the time. And many times, I dont press the Publish button because, I havent had time to revise, edit or explore a bit more. Taking days off and dedicating to writing sounds good. Wish you the best.

It’s really great that you are taking time off to write more, Sanch. I have been going through a decision making and messing up phase now and finally figured that I should concentrate more on writing and everything else will happen if it has to happen. All the best, Sanch. πŸ™‚

You are inspiring me to dedicate time to my own writing! I have been kicking around a project in my head since April a year ago – making giveaway ebook from my posts in the 2014 A to Z Challenge. But I’ve been far too proficient at ‘letting other things get in the way’.

Sanch, I’m definitely in the same boat with my writing goals, as far as, not having the time to really devote to it. I like your idea about reducing some hours at work in order to write. I really wish I could do that! I also think it’s so cool that you love creative nonfiction. It’s definitely a genre I need some more practice in – I think I’m more comfortable writing fiction and I would like to branch out!

Thanks so much for joining us for #WODW! xo

Sanch, first of all, thank you for joining us for WODW! Your post speaks to me so much πŸ™‚ I wish I had more time for writing as well. I often feel overwhelmed by all the ideas in my head and the lack of time I actually have to get them on paper. It’s frustrating to say the least.

One thing that helps is to jot every idea down –even if that’s as far as the idea goes– cause at least I’m getting it out of my head. It can make one crazy to have hundreds of ideas buzzing around their mind! Put those mofos on paper! πŸ™‚

Good for you for reserving your own time for writing! I’m sure with that sort of mentality and drive you will make big accomplishments sooner than later. Good luck!
