Flourish Inside Out

Getting awe-struck in March

It’s that time of the month when we talk about the positive emotion as part of Flourish Inside Out for the new month. For March, our focus is on Awe.

What is awe?

I’m sure we’ve all experienced a sense of awe at some point in our lives. It’s that sense of ‘wow’-ness. Okay, so that’s not the technical definition. A sense of awe is that sensation if being part of something much bigger than ourselves. For instance, realising that you are just one person in a world of seven billion and the earth is just a tiny place in the entire universe is awe-inducing for sure.

The benefits of awe

  • Awe can help us slow down and be focussed on the present moment (Source)
  • Experiencing awe makes people feel they have more time to spare and this in turn, makes them more patient and more willing to give to others (Source)
  • Even experiencing a small dose of awe is linked to an life satisfaction (Source)
  • People who experience a sense of awe behave in a more helpful and kind manner towards others (Source)
  • Experiencing awe is linked with a sense of calm which in turn is therefore beneficial for alleviating anxiety and depressive symptoms (Source)
  • Awe helps us cope better with stress (Source)
  • People who experience awe more frequently in their lives showed lower levels of interleukin-6 which is associated with heart disease (Source)

How to cultivate awe

  • Go out into nature – hike, hit the beach or even just go for a walk in the park and notice the beauty of nature around you. Take an awe walk.
  • Take a trip down memory lane and try to remember things that awed you
  • Watch a beautiful dance routine, observe a beautiful painting and let them make experience a sense of awe
  • Watch the sun rise or a sunset – nothing is more awe-inspiring than this in my opinion
  • Write about personal experiences of awe in as much detail as possible (Source)
  • Read an awe-inspiring story
  • Watch an awe-inspiring video

Join me this month as I aim to capture awe in my life. You can follow my journey on Instagram or look for the hashtags #flourishinsideout and #flourishin2017. You are welcome to join in on the same.

I think I cultivate awe in my life by getting out and about into nature as much as possible with my camera and capturing some beautiful landscapes. 🙂 #TeamLovinLife

Love this! For me, it’s heading to the ocean. Sitting on the beach, watching the sunset and leaving the devices, the stress of the day and the world behind.

It definitely looks like you’ve made an ‘awe’ some start to March, Sanch!
I think being a parent has helped me look at things different – perhaps with a little more ‘awe’ than I used to, previously.
There’s a sense of wonderment – and hence just sometimes it’s all about looking at things differently, I suppose.

A change of perspective can also make things a but more ‘awesome’

I’ve been without a CD player for ages and just listening to Triple J (which I do enjoy), but we recently bought a new CD player and being able to listen to my own music is AWEsome. It has really added awe to my days and I feel enriched. Bring on an awesome March.

Nature is what give me my AWE STRUCK moments – particularly beautiful sunrises and sunsets and maybe a beautiful big tree or a stunning landscape. I might experience some awe of a different type on Saturday night when I go to the Adele concert!! #TeamLovinLife

Love getting out into nature. My best memory of ‘awe’ like that is from when I was younger. I used to ride my bike alot, and at sunset, I’d stop and watch the sun sink over the fields of wheat around the area I lived. It was absolutely stunning. It’s stuck with me for over 35 years.

Things that make you go ‘awe’ tend to change your perspective, even if for just a short while. For a moment at least, you’re reminded that there is so much more in life than the daily chores and worries that press you down. Good theme for March.

A beautiful post. Awe for me is being able to be very present in the moment and just looking at something unique. The view of my city from the top of a tower, penguins skittering across the ice.

Your post reminded me of that website where the visual puts one’s perceived problem in focus, at first. Then it starts showing it in perspective with the universe, and slowly, our problem looks smaller and smaller as other things occupy the space around it. Yes, it is truly awe-some to use that strategy to look at things in their true light. Love your post.

What an AWE-some post. Like you must have guessed by now – a lot of things induce the ‘awe’ in me. When I churn out an edible meal, the Sunsets, trying to find something that comes to me without much effort – so on and so forth. These days, it’s the trees that are awesome. 🙂
