My character strengths #FridayReflections

We all have character strengths. Character strengths are the positive parts of our personality that influence how we think, feel and behave. They are the keys to being our best selves. According to leading positive psychology professor Martin Seligman, we use our character strengths to help us thrive in life.

Every individual has 24 character strengths but in different degrees. They fall under 6 categories: Wisdom, Courage, Humanity, Justice, Temperance and Transcendence.

I’d taken the character strengths survey years ago but I don’t remember my results. Recently however, I re-took it and I believe the results truly reflect who I am. I’m going to share my top 5 character strengths.

character strengths

Bravery

My biggest strength is bravery and I’m not surprised. It’s my ability to face my fears, take up new challenges and deal with difficult situations that has led me to where I am today. I’ve moved countries at 21, moved again just last year, had to make new friends, make a new life mostly by myself. If it wasn’t for that first step of bravery, I wouldn’t be leading the life I am. It’s not perfect but it’s my life.

Curiosity

I’d like to think I’m interested in several different areas but sometimes I’m not sure. But maybe my love for reading, writing and exploring places is enough curiosity! Or perhaps even sifting through the depths of my imagination… 🙂

Fairness

I’m big on fairness as you can see through my passion for equality and my advocacy for feminism.

Honesty

My words on this space are nothing if not honest. I try to be as honest as possible even in daily life and sometimes, this has gotten me into trouble. I do lie, of course — the little white lies — but usually can get caught out as my facial expressions tend to give it away. I like to think I am a genuine person which is why teens and kids I work with can build rapport with me and trust me.

Humility

I’m going to just blame this one on my fear of ‘pride comes before a fall’. I rarely like to brag especially about work or financial successes and even when I get complimented for doing a good job, I get highly embarrassed. I’d rather just fly under the radar.

I like the idea of knowing my strengths and putting them to use as I go about my day. I do think they help me flourish and be the best person I can be. While I am still a work in progress, someday I hope I can get there.

Have you done the character strengths survey?

What are your top 5 strengths?

Do share!

If you are new to Friday Reflections, here’s what it’s about. It’s the end of the week, you’re probably exhausted with work, and all you want to do is sit back, put your feet up, sip on some fancy cocktail or wine, and write away.

Corinne from Everyday Gyaan and yours truly give you writing prompts and all you have to do is choose any one of those prompts to blog about and link up every Friday. The link will be open till the Monday. After you link up, be sure to spread the love by visiting other bloggers who have linked up too.

Prompts for this week:

1. I’ve always wondered…
2. Take the VIA Character Strength Survey and talk about your strengths and how it might help you in life
3. What would you do with 10 million dollars
4. “Keep Going. Your hardest times often lead to the greatest moments of your life. Keep going. Tough situations build strong people in the end.” – Roy T. Bennett. Use this quote in your post or as an inspiration for one.
5. Picture Prompt (credit: Living my imperfect life)

We had two featured writers last week: Roshan for his post on a moral dilemma and Holly for her interesting take on the quote. {Slightly embarrassing for us but good on you Holly}! If you want to be our featured writer next week, all you have to do is write on one of the prompts above and link up below!

I didn’t take the survey; I used another prompt to whine. Is whining on the list? No, seriously, my top trait? Possibly faithfulness. Certainly not bravery, which I am trying to develop – but, apparently, not fast enough.

I took a similar survey last week and I was amazed at how accurate the results were. It almost made me cry as I realized the character strengths I want in my life actually were evident to others. Thank you for sharing yours.

I love your top five character traits. They sum you up perfectly. Mine were a little dispiriting. Bravery was well down the list. Oops. And I should have thought of just listing my top five of waffling on about all 24! Surprised waffling wasn’t at the top of my list…

Knowing you a little over the course of two years, these are your core strengths and as a follower and reader, I see that in your writing. I haven’t taken this assessment but the strength’s finder by Tom Rath. I once wrote a post too. 🙂 let me take this up and share my results.

I think I’m not surprised to see your strengths. You are one amazingly brave person and all your qualities come shining through in your writing. After reading your post, I was tempted to take the test only to find an interesting mix of strengths that I possess which only helped to validate what I thought about myself. Your list looks great. It was lovely getting to know a little more about the person that you are, Sanchie.
